The department commenced in the year 1998 with an intake of 100 undergraduates. The first batch of BDS students passed out in the year 2004. The clinical wing is divided into the undergraduate and postgraduate sections.

We have a reference library in the department DJ College of Dental Sciences & Research with all the latest books and journals. The Department has an outpatient turnover of ample number of patients daily. There are 22 dental chairs in the postgraduate sections out of which five are executive chairs and are equipped with light cure units and a three-way syringe unit to help and enhance the quality of work by our postgraduates who use these chairs to their utmost.
An undergraduate student is initially introduced to the basics of orthodontics by means of lectures, seminars and discussions from 3rd year onwards. During their clinical postings in the Final year and Internship they have to record proper clinical history, methodical case examination and diagnosis and treatment planning. They are suppose to fabricate various removable appliances under the supervision and treat the minor malocclusions.
Every student is trained in the meticulous application of different treatment modalities that ranges from the conventional approach of Functional to Standard Edgewise Technique to the recent refined Pre-Adjusted Technique along with the combined Orthodontic-Surgical Approach. Strict emphasis is given to proper diagnosis and treatment planning and regular seminars are held in collaboration with various other specialities to conform with the interdisciplinary treatment planning.
The academic activities involved are state of art presentations of cases, discussions, seminars and journal discussion by every postgraduate student, which is considered for internal assessment. Dissertation, which are a partial fulfilment of the MDS university examination, are carried out by the postgraduate under the supervision of their respective guides. It is compulsory for all Postgraduate student to present a poster/paper at the Indian orthodontic society conference held annually. They are required to attend seminars, symposiums and continuing orthodontic education programs and workshops as per DCI norms.
Our department is mainly concerned with the treatment of malocclusions and dento-facial deformities and we provide contemporary orthodontic care to over a thousand patients every month. The motto of our department is excellence in clinical care and patient satisfaction. A robust OPD ensures that more than 500 new cases are added each year resulting in ample clinical material for our trainee post-graduates. Our residents and faculty treat a wide variety of cases ranging from simple malocclusions to the most complex orthodontic problems. The department employs the latest techniques and advancements in orthodontic therapy such as Dolphin software for treatment planning, CBCT, lingual technique, self-ligation, micro-implants, orthognathic surgery and more to ensure the best clinical care to our patients and vast clinical exposure to our residents. The post-graduate program aims to train students to become competent and astute orthodontists while the under-graduate program imparts sufficient skill and knowledge to treat simple cases, co-ordinate treatment with specialists in more complex cases and to make appropriate referrals.
